Spring Hill, a suburb just north of Brisbane’s CBD, is a blend of old and new. It was named in the nineteenth century because the hill on which the suburb was built was the source of the creek that was Brisbane’s first fresh water supply. It is one of Brisbane’s oldest residential neighbourhoods and still contains many of the old cottages though some have been replaced by modern offices and apartment blocks. Wickham Terrace is known for its medical specialists and for St Andrew’s War Memorial Hospital.

Spring Hill‘s most famous landmark is the Old Windmill in Wickham Park. Also known as the Tower Mill or Windmill Tower, it was built in 1824 when Brisbane was still a penal colony. Another historic building still in the area is the Spring Hill Baths, the first in-ground public baths in Brisbane and still working today. There are numerous schools in Spring Hill including Brisbane Grammar School, Brisbane Girls’ Grammar School and St Joseph’s on Gregory Terrace.

Bowen Hills is located just 3 km north-east of the Brisbane CBD. Its population is growing rapidly due to the close proximity to the city and the number of medium to high density residential and commercial developments in the area. Campbell Street in Bowen Hills is the home to Brisbane’s two main newspapers, The Courier Mail and The Sunday Mail. There are many historic buildings in Bowen Hills including the old Queensland Museum and the Twelfth Night Theatre. Since the museum moved to the Southbank precinct, the building is now home to Queensland Youth Orchestra as well as being a rehearsal venue for many other community music and arts groups.

For 10 days every August, Bowen Hills comes alive with the Brisbane Ekka at the RNA Showgrounds. The formal name is the Royal Brisbane Show and it is the annual agricultural show of Queensland. Traditionally it was to show off agricultural and industrial exhibits as well as new inventions in those areas. Cattle and other farm animals were shown, a practice that is still in place today. These days families go to the Ekka for Showbags, Sideshow Alley, Animal and Fashion Parades, Fireworks and the Baby Animal Nursery. Dagwood Dogs, Fairy Floss and Strawberry Ice Creams are favourite foods to eat. A fun day out for the whole family.

Brisbane Carpet Cleaning Brisbane City division regularly attends to properties in the Brisbane City suburb of Newstead. Newstead is bordered by the Brisbane River and Breakfast Creek to the East and North. Newstead House, built in 1846, is Brisbane’s oldest surviving house. It is now a museum and is heritage listed and as it is set in the beautiful Newstead Park, it is a popular place for picnics and there are often weddings set in the picturesque rotunda. Breakfast Creek Hotel (known as “The Brekky Creek”) is one of Brisbane’s best pubs. People head there in droves looking for one of their famous steaks.

A popular Brisbane City suburb is Milton. It is known as the home of the Castlemaine Perkins Brewery which is seen from afar by its flashing XXXX sign on the roof. This is right across the road from the Milton QR Railway station on the Ipswich line. Another venue with easy access from the station is Suncorp Stadium, formerly known as Lang Park. It is home to the Brisbane Broncos NRL team, the Brisbane Roar soccer team and the Queensland State of Origin games among others. The stadium is also used as an entertainment venue and has hosted Robbie Williams, Andre Rieu and U2 in the past.

Park Road in Milton is a restaurant and cafe strip and is especially popular at nights and on the weekends. Many of the local business people come down to eat and meet there at lunch time. Nearby is another restaurant/cafe strip in Rosalie. Parts of Milton and Rosalie were badly flooded in the recent 2011 floods but are getting back on track and business is booming.
