Cleaning Slate Tiles

All Aces Cleaning & Restoration knows that slate tiles can be quite brittle if left unsealed and difficult to keep clean.

Our slate tile cleaning process begins with an examination of the quality of the sealer before embarking on any cleaning process. Sometimes the sealer may need to be removed while other times it need not be. A sealer is either solvent based or simply water-based. Both solvent and water base sealers look quite glossy which makes the colours on the sealers noticeable.

Solvent sealers have a number of advantages, one being they are durable and long lasting. Water-based sealers however are not as durable. However, water-based sealers have an advantage over solvent sealers in they give slate tiles a wet looking appearance and make the slate much easier to clean with a mop. They also make the slate tiles attract less dirt from the environment and are harder to stain. The disadvantage of solvent sealers is that when the sealer is worn out, the repainting may need some solvent strippers that are expensive to purchase. Their maintenance costs are thus rather high.

Water-based sealers are, on the other hand, a lot cheaper than solvent based sealers. They are much easier to use and low cost in maintenance. They however have a shorter lifespan.
